Teaching Ourselves History

Teaching Ourselves History

Central Ky started black history month by quizzing NSBE Jr on their knowledge of MLK Jr. We used this as a segue to discuss monumental icons of our culture. NSBE Jr left with homework to create a quiz. They returned with questions from Harriet Tubman to Michael Jordan’s 6 championships.

NSBE Jr: Balloon Powered Cars

The purpose of this activity was to create a realistic engineering situation. Each NSBE Jr. member or group was given the same directions: you are being hired to construct a balloon powered car from a select group of materials, each costing a different price. Each member or group was judged on:

  • Design
  • Cost
  • Aesthetic Appeal
  • Performance

Each criterion was given a respective weighted score. The cost per car was not limited however it played a vital role in the scoring criteria. After several planning, design and building sessions members were able to race their cars.

The winners are:

Elementary School Winner: Ms. Na’imah Muhammad

Middle School/High School Winner: Mr. Mustapha Muhammad

2011 Roots and Heritage

On Saturday September 10th , 2011 CKY NSBE Alumni Extension participated in the 23rd Annual Roots and Heritage Festival in Lexington, KY. The Roots and Heritage Festival is an event that brings together people from all over the state to enjoy, music, food, parades and other events that are expressive of African American history and culture. This event was a great place for NSBE AE to introduce their intent as an organization to motivate the local community to get involved. NSBE AE members were there to greet locals and area festival goers with friendly faces to have conversation, and give pamphlets of information regarding their mission to increase STEM awareness in the greater Lexington area. This event was also used as one of the many membership drive activities CKY NSBE AE will be holding this year for people who are interested in making a strong impact to the community using STEM awareness programs. If you or anyone are interested in hearing more about our organization please contact us!

August 9th, 2011 NSBE jr. Meeting: Chemical Density

August 9th, 2011 NSBE jr. Meeting: Chemical Density

On Tuesday, August 9, 2011, the Central Kentucky NSBE Jr. chapter met and learned about chemical engineering. After gaining a basic understanding of what this profession entails, the children participated in an experiment in which they learned about density. This experiment taught them how to determine the relative densities of materials through the use of everyday items. We used water, oil and corn syrup, along with some physical items to demonstrate how density affects the ability of one material to sink or float on another material. The kids had fun and now know one way to determine if one substance has more density than another.
